Jamie Kim’s figurative paintings and portraits are heavily influenced by childhood photographs, expansive landscapes and traditional Korean folk art imagery. She juxtaposes elements from her personal history with those from a collective cultural memory, blending seemingly disparate elements into imaginary narratives that feel real and familiar.  Her work evokes feelings of melancholy and nostalgia and resonates with the vulnerability associated with childhood. Many of her pieces feature children at five or six years old, the age at which many researchers claim that an individual’s personality traits solidify and become apparent.
